On 1 December 2011 the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) Divide ice-core project reached its final depth of 3405 m. The WAIS Divide ice core is not only the longest US ice core to date, but is also the highest-quality deep ice core, including ice from the brittle ice zone, that the US has ever recovered. The methods used at WAIS Divide to handle and log the drilled ice, the procedures used to safely retrograde the ice back to the US National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL) and the methods used to process and sample the ice at the NICL are described and discussed.

This study is based on 1015 live single calves brod by artificial insemination in a herd of Ayrshire, Friesian, Jersey and two-breed and three-breed cross cattle derived from them. Birth weights, subjected to a least squares analysis, show little effect of year or season of calving. Males were 6·0 lb. heavier than females; second and later parity calves were 6·6 lb. heavier than first parity calves.
Over the range of breeds and crosses studied, heredity was the principal determinant of mean birth weight. No evidence of heterosis was found— means for crossbred calves, however, differed in reciprocal crosses. They deviated from the mean of the parents in the direction of the maternal weight at birth. If 0 is the mean birth weight of the dam's breed or cross and 0 of the sire's breed, the mean weight of offspring is closely estimated by
This expression may not apply to the crossing of breeds differing much more in weight than the Jersey and Friesian breeds. In such crosses it is likely that small dams depress foetal growth more than large dams promote it. The maternal influence on birth weight in cattle as expressed above is in both qualitative and quantitative agreement with the maternal influence as derived from egg transfer studies in sheep.
It is a pleasure to record the authors' heavy obligations to many friends for help during the course of this long experiment. The Milk Marketing Board, in the persons of Dr J. Edwards, C.B.E., Mr T. The main goal of the Working Group was to gather astrometric observations made during the triennum as well as old observations not yet published in the data base. The WG encouraged the making of new observations. A Spring School was organized in China in order to teach the observational techniques of natural satellites to students and young astronomers. New theoretical models of the motion of the satellites and fit of the current models to new observations were used in order to make ephemerides of all the planetary satellites with tools useful for observations such as configurations. These ephemerides named MULTISAT are available at <www.imcce.fr/sat> or at <lnfm1.sai.msu.ru/neb/nss/nssephme.htm>.
Attention function after childhood stroke

We investigated attentional outcome after childhood stroke and orthopedic diagnosis in medical controls. Twenty-nine children with focal stroke lesions and individually matched children with clubfoot or scoliosis were studied with standardized attention and neuroimaging assessments. Stroke lesions were quite varied in location and commonly involved regions implicated in Posner's model of attention networks. Children with stroke lesions performed significantly more poorly regarding attention function compared with controls. Performance on the Starry Night, a test demanding alerting and sensory-orienting but not executive attention function, was significantly associated with lesion size in the alerting and sensory-orienting networks but not the executive attention network. Furthermore, earlier age at lesion acquisition was significantly associated with poorer attention function even when lesion size was controlled. These findings support the theory of dissociable networks of attention and add to evidence from studies of children with diffuse and focal brain damage that early insults are associated with worse long-term outcomes in many domains of neuropsychological function. In addition, these results may provide clues towards the understanding of mechanisms underlying attention in children. (JINS, 2004, 10, 976–986.)
Determinants of oxygen uptake kinetics in older humans following single-limb endurance exercise training

We hypothesised that the observed acceleration in the kinetics of exercise on-transient oxygen uptake (V˙O2) of five older humans (77 ± 7 years (mean ± S.D.) following 9 weeks of single-leg endurance exercise training was due to adaptations at the level of the muscle cell. Prior to, and following training, subjects performed constant-load single-limb knee extension exercise. Following training V˙O2 kinetics (phase 2, τ) were accelerated in the trained leg (week 0, 92 ± 44 s; week 9, 48 ± 22 s) and unchanged in the untrained leg (week 0, 104 ± 43 s; week 9, 126 ± 35 s). The kinetics of mean blood velocity in the femoral artery were faster than the kinetics of V˙O2, but were unchanged in both the trained (week 0, 19 ± 10 s; week 9, 26 ± 11 s) and untrained leg (week 0, 20 ± 18 s; week 9, 18 ± 10 s). Maximal citrate synthase activity, measured from biopsies of the vastus lateralis muscle, increased (P < 0.05) in the trained leg (week 0, 6.7 ± 2.0 µmol (g wet wt)-1 min-1; week 9, 11.4 ± 3.6 µmol (g wet wt)-1 min-1) but was unchanged in the untrained leg (week 0, 5.9 ± 0.5 µmol (g wet wt)-1 min-1; week 9, 7.9 ± 1.9 µmol (g wet wt)-1 min-1). These data suggest that the acceleration of V˙O2 kinetics was due to an improved rate of O2 utilisation by the muscle, but was not a result of increased O2 delivery. A key determinant of whether livestock manure is an asset or liability for agricultural producers and for society more generally is the amount produced relative to the nearby farmland area to which it can be economically transported for application. The objectives of this study are to estimate manure N and P loadings on the cropland and rangeland associated with 78 feedlot farm operations in South Dakota and to determine if they are greater for larger feedlots.
A substantial fraction of the feedlot operators studied apply plant-available N and P in livestock manure at rates that exceed crop and grass fertility requirements, and intensity of manure nutrient loadings on cropland is strongly and positively related to feedlot size. These findings raise a warning regarding possible nonpoint-source pollution of vulnerable water resources from manure produced by fed cattle in larger feedlots.

Ever since the International Regulations for Prevention of Collision at Sea (IRPCS) were introduced as a control system for collision avoidance, there have been disputes and arguments about exactly what they mean, and how they should have been applied in particular collision incidents. The principle of deciding by international agreement which ships should be given the duty of keeping clear of other ships generally works well but, as traffic volumes increase, so do situations in which the IRPCS alone do not provide a clear indication of what is expected of the mariner. Various solutions have been addressed to this problem, ranging from proposed radical revisions of the whole principle of collision avoidance, through periodic thoughtful adjustments to the details of the IRPCS, to informal additions and requirements imposed by individual shipowners on their fleets. The residual problem with any solution (except perhaps the first mentioned) is that there will always be exceptions where the rules are unclear or ambiguous. Adding adjustments may reduce these exceptions but, unless all uncertainties can be removed, the adjustments may create a new and even more complex set of exceptions, which are yet more difficult to interpret.

Ships' bridge watchkeeping, although the prime task of the officer of the watch, makes very low task demands in terms of information processing and required speed of response compared to most other vigilance tasks. Consequently, performance of the visual lookout task is difficult to describe and evaluate systematically. Results from an on-board observational study show that lookout lapse periods can be economically described by simple mathematical models, which assist in comparison and evaluation of task performance.

Meeting encounters, in which it is uncertain at what range the give-way ship will manoeuvre, are analysed using a model based on probability theory. Course alteration ranges of both giveway and (if necessary) stand-on ships are closely fitted by a simple mathematical model, which is also used to interpret the efficiency of the Collision Regulations.

Two pairs of uniformly treated identical twins were weighed four times daily for 16 days. In addition, daily growth rate was analysed for 10 pairs of identical twins kept on high and low planes of nutrition over a 16-week period.
Identical twins fluctuated in body weight from hour to hour and day to day in a significantly more similar manner than did unrelated animals. The greater similarity found when all animals were uniformly treated still persisted when identical twins were placed on different planes of nutrition.

For the quantitative analysis of a 65 Cu-30 Ni-S Fe alloy, a 96 Cu-3 Si-1 Mn alloy, and a 78 Cu-20 Zn-2 Al alloy, the Ziebold empirical method of correcting electron-microbeam-probe data was used. Four binary standards, of single-phase Cu-Ni, Ni-Fe, Cu-Mn, and Cu-Zn alloys, were cast and the a correction factor found for each element in each binary by Ziebold's relationship (1 – K)/K – α (1 – C)/C, where K – I/I0 found in the probe and C is the weight fraction found by wet chemistry. The ARL EMX probe was used at 30 kV with a 25-μ beam diameter to negate inhomogeneities. Experience with these binaries indicated that in the presence of secondary fluorescence, the experimental α values agreed poorly with theoretically calculated K values; however, where secondary fluorescence was negligible, agreement between the experimental and theoretical α values was good. The α values for Cu–Si, Cu–Al, Al-Zn, and Mn–Si alioys, were therefore calculated from the theoretical equations. The α values for Cu–Fe alloys were also calculated from theoretical considerations because single-phase binaries over the composition range of interest could not be made for this system. All these α values were used in Ziebold's ternary equations to correct probe data (again using a 25-μ beam) from specimens of Cu–Ni-Fe, Cu–Si–Mn, and Cu-Zn–Al. These results were compared to wet-chemistry analyses for the same specimens with quite good correlation between the two sets of data. Calibration curves for the binary systems Cu-Ni, Cu-Fe, Ni-Fe, Cu-Mn, Cu-Si, Mn-Si, Cu-Al, Cu-Zn, and Al-Zn were made and are reproduced.
